During World War II, the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) were established by the United States Navy as an elite special-purpose force. Their main role was to reconnoiter and eliminate enemy defensive obstacles on beaches before amphibious landings. They were also responsible for retrieving astronauts after splashdown in the Mercury through Apollo manned space flight programs.
The UDTs were pioneers in combat swimming, closed-circuit diving, underwater demolitions, and midget submarine operations. They eventually evolved into the present-day United States Navy SEALs. The legacy of the UDTs is honored in the shorts that they made famous.
